Doctors warn against taking medication for horses sold in on-farm and home stores to treat COVID-19

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – With the pandemic underway, consumers are turning to other methods to treat or prevent COVID-19.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, there is growing interest in the use of ivermectin, which is often used to treat or prevent parasites in animals.

“There is a lot of misinformation going around and you may have heard that it is okay to take high doses of ivermectin. This is wrong, ”the FDA said.

Although research is ongoing on ivermectin and COVID-19, the FDA says it has not reviewed the data to support its use and that taking it can be very dangerous.

CoxHealth claims that ivermectin is not an antiviral drug and is not intended for use against COVID-19.

“Ivermection is not an antiviral and again if there was hope I would be the first person to take it,” said Dr Robin Trotman of CoxHealth.

Dr Trotman spoke of the current trend of mistrust of doctors, but reassured that they only wanted to help and defend the public interest.

“It’s real mistrust and people don’t want to do what we recommend and are suspicious of the veracity or intention of doctors saying not to do it,” Trotman said.

Dr Trotman explained that there were no other reasons and that no one was planning to use this drug to treat COVID-19.

“There is no big pharma money involved in the drug, ivermectin is generic, there are no doctors with skin in the game to sing about this drug. We want people to get better, we want this to go away, ”Dr Trotman said.

Dr Trotman explained that the genesis comes from a small group of people.

“I think the genesis of mistrust and ivermectin came from a small, very vocal group. This group does not seem to subscribe to the normal tradition of medicine. So for people who don’t really want to look at the evidence, unfortunately, they fall in and generate conspiracy theories, ”Dr. Trotman said.

Ivermectin is not an antiviral drug and can only be used safely in very specific doses for certain parasitic worms, topicals for head lice and skin conditions according to the FDA. According to the FDA, a large amount of ivermectin can interact with other drugs or even lead to an overdose.
