Dodgers to promote top prospects Josias Gray to make his major league debut tomorrow night, manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including Juan Toribio from MLB.com). Gray is not on the 40-player roster, so another move is ahead to make way for his official selection.
Selected by the Reds in the second round of the 2018 Division II Draft on Moyne College, Gray was traded to Los Angeles a few months later as part of the deal that sent Yasiel puig in Cincinnati. The following season, he emerged as one of the game’s top pitching prospects. He dominated three minor league levels in 2019, demonstrating a three-length mix and surprisingly advanced mastery for a player who didn’t. converted to full-time pitcher before his final season at Le Moyne.
At the start of the season, Gray appeared on Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects, FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen, and Athletic’s Keith Law. Longenhagen was the most optimistic of the line, ranking the 23-year-old as a No.29 prospect in the league. In his scouting report, Longenhagen praised Gray’s three-length mix and solid fastball mastery, noting that he projected himself to be a “mainstay of the middle rotation” in his prime. BA and Law echoed those sentiments, pointing to his continued development of his secondary locations and his solid understanding of pitching as reasons for optimism that he will continue to improve.
Gray reached Oklahoma City’s triple A for the first time this year, but a shoulder injury sidelined him for two months. He only made four appearances because of it, but Gray showed no difficulty adjusting to the higher level of minors. He allowed just five runs in 15 2/3 innings, striking out 22 while hitting two walks.
Adding a rotation aid before the July 30 trade deadline should be a priority for the Dodgers. Los Angeles drags the Giants by one game in a hotly contested NL West. Gray pitching well from the start would go a long way in stabilizing the starting staff, although that’s likely a target area for President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman and his front office, regardless of how well they perform.
Even though Gray is in the majors for good, he will not achieve free agent status until the end of the 2027 season. He is not scheduled for officiating eligibility until the 2024- offseason. 25. Future elective assignments may delay this projection of service time.
