Android 12 is the biggest visual update to the platform we’ve seen in years, and alongside bigger redesigns like Material You, there’s a bunch of new animations as well. One new animation that isn’t immediately obvious, however, is an updated charging animation when your Pixel phone is turned off.
If you plug in a powered off Pixel phone, a battery indicator appears, followed by the percentage when the phone begins to charge. On this percentage, starting with Android 12, you will also see a ripple animation. It’s at a low frame rate, but it’s along the same lines as what is seen when the phone is turned on.
Starting with Beta 1, there have been “wave” animations that show the state of charge, although when the power is on that wave matches the system accent colors powered by Material You. These colors, unfortunately, are not reflected in the power-off animation. It’s unclear exactly when this animation first appeared, but the first time we spotted it was in Android 12 Beta 3, and it didn’t appear to be live on a Pixel 5 running on Beta. 2.
You probably don’t think about this stuff when your phone is turned off very often, but it’s a good setting nonetheless. Instead of just showing a static number, it’s now clear that the phone is not charging. This can be especially useful if you are using a wireless charger. Either way, though, it’s just a nice touch that polishes up the look and feel of your phone. You can see the animation in action below.
