A dog was killed after assaulting a police officer during an arrest at a residence in Beaumont on Tuesday evening.
The incident began around 7:01 p.m. on Sundance Drive. According to the Beaumont Police Department, officers were called to the scene to respond to a man armed with a knife.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers contacted a man and a woman who resided in the house. The two men told police that another family member threatened them with a knife, police said.
“The officers located the subject at the door of the residence, but he refused the order for the officers to come out and speak to them. In an attempt to detain the subject, the officers entered through the front door as he fled inside, “read a press release from Beaumont Police.
Police said the subject was found in the back bedroom. When officers began to arrest him, a large pit bull bit one of the officers. The police used his gun, shooting the dog.
“At this point, several family members began to threaten the officers and further assistance was requested,” Beaumont police officials wrote.
Additional agents arrived and the scene was contained.
The injured officer was rushed to hospital for treatment of their injuries, there was no word on the severity of the injuries. The dog was taken to an area veterinary clinic where the dog later succumbed to his injury.
No other injuries were reported.
A 57-year-old man from Beaumont was arrested and transported to the Smith Correction Facility in Banning. He faces charges of terrorist threats, weapon branding and resisting arrest.
