Dolphins say Tagovailoa broke his ribs and won’t play Raiders

Tua Tagovailoa has fractured his ribs and will not play on Sunday when the Miami Dolphins visit the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Dolphins announced the updated diagnosis on Wednesday, after initial tests suggested Tagovailoa had bruised ribs. Further exams have shown the fractures, and the Dolphins have already decided Jacoby Brissett will start this weekend.

It’s unclear how long Tagovailoa will be sidelined. Dolphins coach Brian Flores declined to offer a timeline for a potential return, but said Tagovailoa is already improving.

Tagovailoa was injured in the second set of Miami’s 35-0 loss to Buffalo last weekend. He took a hit on a fourth play from the Bills’ AJ Epenesa, then slowly walked to the sideline where a cart was waiting to take him out of the field.

Tagovailoa completed 17 of 22 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown when the Dolphins went to Las Vegas and beat the Raiders 26-25 last season.

Brissett completed 24 of 40 passes for 169 yards and one interception after entering the game as a replacement for Tagovailoa last week. He’s been sacked four times, as part of a six-sack day by the Dolphins’ offensive line – a number that doesn’t even count the game where Tagovailoa was injured.
