Fears are growing again today in the face of a wave of COVID cases. Wall Street has had its worst day since May, with investors worried about the rise in infections and the possibility that they will put further restrictions on daily life.
COVID cases have increased by nearly 70% in one week in the United States. They have been significantly higher in some southern states. But Los Angeles County recorded 10,000 new cases in a week, the highest since March. Unvaccinated Americans are the hardest hit, accounting for over 95% of hospitalizations. The CDC director warned of an unvaccinated pandemic on Friday.
We turn to Dr Anthony Fauci. He is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the chief medical adviser to President Biden.
Dr Fauci, welcome back to “NewsHour”.
So a direct question. What threat does the Delta variant currently represent?
Dr. Anthony Fauci, Chief Medical Advisor to President Biden: Judy, that’s a significant threat.
It clearly has the ability and efficiency to spread from person to person very easily, making it a considerable threat. And if you look at how it’s becoming dominant in this country, it’s gone from a few percentages – points of the variants that were in circulation, to now almost 80 percent.
And in some parts of the country, up to 90 percent of the variants are the Delta variant. It has therefore already shown its incredible ability to be able to be transmitted effectively from person to person, which makes it very dangerous.
