I feel like there are a lot of retro Quake-type first-person shooters out there now, and I feel like each of them has a name like Rune Rampage or Demonic Burn or Shotgun Hell. Dread Templar is the last to step into the crowded doghouse – and dang if his shotgun and disposable katana don’t make me want to bust demons.
While the core of the game is inspired by Quake – gribbly demons, a powerful shotgun, key cards, the color brown – there are also special abilities with cooldowns that you can use. This includes the dashboard and the katana jets you see in the video above. There is also a small bullet time, which triggers whenever you kill an enemy.
Dem … I already forgot his name, and I just had to check. Dread Templar, sorry, was previously called Hell Hunt, for which a demo was available through Itch. This has naturally been taken offline now, although there are a few videos you can watch.
Dread Templar is available on the Wish List on Steam and aims to enter Early Access this fall.
My favorite game with this aesthetic is still Devil Daggers, who are all skulls but hung in a growing wave survival structure that makes him feel more like his own thing. It recently received an update for its 5th anniversary.
