TV presenter Julia Bradbury shared a powerful image ahead of her mastectomy to raise awareness about breast cancer.
The Dublin-born star, 51, revealed last month that she had been diagnosed with the disease which kills an estimated 685,000 women a year worldwide.
Speaking to social media, Bradbury revealed she was asked to “say goodbye to my chest”.
“I’m going to take my last walk in this body. I’m going to take my last walk with these breasts,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of herself before her surgery.
“One of the best pieces of advice I received in the weeks of being diagnosed with breast cancer (thank you) .. is to say goodbye to my chest and thank my body for all the sustenance, the joy and the life he gave me.
“Goodbye left chest .. I breastfed my children with you, I jumped into the sea with you, I walked thousands of kilometers with you. And you gave me (as well as others) fun along the way.
“Now it’s time to make way for something new.
“Thank you ALL for your love and support. See you on the other side.
“Control yourself! And take care of your body. “
Bradbury, who hosted the BBC’s popular Countryfile from 2004-2014, added the hashtag #breastcancerawareness.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual global event to raise awareness about the disease and raise money to fund research.
According to the World Health Organization, 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020.
Bradbury, who has three children with her husband Gerard Cunningham, was born in Dublin while her English father and Greek mother were visiting the country.
She previously tweeted how fond she was for the country of her birth and its beautiful countryside.
