The intersection of Duncan Circle and Harwell Drive in Lafayette is closed due to a ruptured gas line.

The Lafayette Fire Department said at 9:33 a.m. on Saturday, firefighters and the HazMat team were called to Duncan Circle’s 100 block with a ruptured gas line.

The Hazmat team were told that LUS employees were digging to repair a sewer line when they accidentally pierced a gas line. As they monitored the gas levels, first responders noticed that the gas had entered the sewer lines.

Firefighters say this prompted them to evacuate four homes in the area as a safety measure.

The intersection of Duncan Circle and Harwell Drive is closed at this time.

The gas leak has been secured.

Atmos Energy is on site to perform repairs. First responders and LUS personnel evacuate the gas from the sewer lines. They expect the incident to be rectified within the next 2 hours.

No injuries were reported.
