Dustin Johnson didn’t just win the Masters 2020 on Sunday, he did it in a historic way. Finishing 4 under 68 in the fourth round, Johnson set a record 72 holes with 20 under, the lowest tied score in Masters history at Augusta National.

At 20 cents, Johnson also tied the mark for the lowest at par score in major league history. He missed a birdie putt on the No. 18 far from breaking it.

DJ won the Masters by five strokes over runner-up Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im. This margin is the largest at Augusta National since Tiger Woods won the 1997 Masters by 12 strokes.

“It’s a dream come true. As a kid I always dreamed of being a Masters champion,” said Johnson, choking as he tried to explain what victory meant to him. “It’s hard to talk. It’s just amazing, obviously, as you can see.”

Johnson’s 268 composite was fueled by a pair of 65 drawn on Thursday and Saturday, although it did not end without difficulty on Sunday. DJ only hit two bogeys in his first 57 holes before bogeying No. 5 and 6 consecutively in Round 4. His lead fell to one stroke.

However, Johnson immediately atoned for those mistakes with a pair of birds to close the top nine. He sailed the rest of the way, finishing the second nine in 3 under for his Masters record 11th consecutive round under par at Augusta National. His four bogeys in total this week were the fewest ever won by a Masters winner.

Woods (1997) and Jordan Spieth (2015) previously held the scoring record at 18 under, although neither have had two rounds of 65 or less like Johnson did this week.

Johnson also tied Woods (2001) and Nolan Henke (1992) in hitting 60 greens in regulation, the most at the Masters in the past 35 years, according to statistician Justin Ray.

2019 Masters finalist Johnson’s victory on Sunday marks his second major victory after the 2016 US Open. He now has 24 career PGA Tour wins.

Johnson finished in the top 10 of the last five Masters he has played. He also ends 2020 by finishing T6 or better in the three majors of this calendar year modified by the COVID-19 pandemic.
