HANOVERTON – United women’s football came out in full swing, beating Maplewood 12-0 on Monday.
The Eagles offense had a lot of open looks in the field and got a hat trick from Samantha Wolfe and Rachael Rhodes.
“Sam has been efficient with his scoring skills throughout his career. She will have to stay humble to move forward, because a hat trick is something incredible to be won, but it won’t be every game. United head coach Sarah Hodgson said.
The Eagles barely allowed Maplewood to reach their end of the field, which helped to exhaust the Rockets.
United scored 10 of their goals in the first half and four in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
“I thought their defense was really strong and they never gave up. It gave us a challenge ”, Wolfe has spoken of facing the Rockets defense. Two of his three goals came in the first six minutes of play. His last goal came at 13:07 in the first half.
The Eagles also received a goal from Addyson Blazer, Camryn Cody, Aubrey Benner, Emily Ingold, Julianna Logan and Lauren Satterfield.
Blazer’s goal gave the Eagles a 5-0 lead with 18:10 left in the first half. She managed to hit him from the side of the net and knock him out of a Maplewood defenseman.
Logan scored his goal with 14:35 left to play.
Wolfe said Logan has played a big part in his success this season.
“She’s very fast, very competitive, and she won’t give up”, said Wolfe. “During practice I run into her, so we can improve each other. She always tells me to play a good game.
Even though United defended their home ground convincingly, they acknowledged that it was not easy for Maplewood to play this game.
“Maplewood did a good job with who they had tonight. They only had 11 players without subs. It’s a tough game for any team. Hodgson said of the Rockets (0-5). “It was a big effort.”
The Eagles are trying to build on this win and hope it can lead to a better future.
United will host Columbiana on Wednesday and Springfield on Saturday.
“I think we are moving forward with this momentum. I told the girls never to be happy with anything. Hodgson noted. “They have to keep working hard, regardless of a win like tonight. There are going to be games where it’s a battle for the 80 minutes. Tomorrow is another day.”
The Eagles are still trying to adjust to the new season.
“We started very slowly this year. We have lost a lot of seniors and haven’t gained a lot. We have to work harder and improve with every game ”, Wolfe added.
