Eagles vs. Redskins final score: Observations from Philadelphia's 32-27 win over Washington in Week 1

FINAL SCORE

The Philadelphia Eagles are 1-0 on the 2019 NFL season after defeating the Washington Redskins on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 32 to 27.

It was an ugly start for the Birds as they fell behind 17 to 0. The offense looked way too much like it did in 2018.

But then the 2019 version of the Eagles showed up. Carson Wentz connected with his new deep threat, DeSean Jackson, for two total touchdowns on the day. Wentz really settled in the near-MVP form, which bodes well for the moving forward team.

The Eagles clearly have some issues to clean up the goal, hey, a win is a win! And a win over the NFC East opponent is even better.

FOURTH QUARTER

Eagles 11th drive: Gerry catches Washington's onside kick attempt and the Eagles line up in victory training. That's the game!

Washington 10th drive: Washington gets to 4th-and-7 from their own 41-yard line. They just convert. But another Washington hold knocks back to their own 39-yard line with 1:57 to play. Uh, Malik Jackson is getting carted off, that's not great! Hassan Ridgeway gets credited with a hurry on Keenum up the middle to force an incomplete. Washington get to 4th-and-12 and they convert again. Ugh. Just end the game already. Washington gets down to the 4-yard line with 12 seconds to go. Keenum completes a pass to Trey Quinn for a touchdown. Bad beat. Eagles 32, Washington 27.

Eagles 9th drive: Brooks no longer in the right guard, Halapulivaati Vaitai in now. Brooks does not seem to be hurt though. Wentz's downfield throw for Agholor on 2nd-and-15, too overthrown. Wentz rolls out on 3rd-and-15, resets his feet, and fires a strike to Ertz for the first. That's 2017 Wentz right there. A holding penalty on Vaitai sets the Eagles back. Howard makes it up with a big run. Jackson drops a pass to bring up 3rd-and-7. Wentz rolls out Jeffery for another first down. I'll say it again: that's 2017 Wentz right there. Sanders breaks off a touchdown run but it's called back on a JJ Arcega-Whiteside penalty. Darn. Wentz sneaks on 3rd-and-1 to set up goal-to-go. Vaitai gets called for another hold to knock the Eagles back. Wentz dumps down to Howard to bring up 3rd-and-goal from 11 yards out. Wentz dumps down to Sproles and the Eagles settle for a 22-yard field goal. Jake Elliott drills it. What a drive. 19 plays! And if the Eagles hold on, they'll cover the spread! Eagles 32, Washington 20.

Washington 9th drive: Washington gets to 3rd-and-15. Schwartz's sticks defense works again and the Eagles get off the field.

Eagles 8th drive (continued): Wentz throws a quick screen to Jeffery, who fights through touch for the TOUCHDOWN Eagles. But wait! It was technically a lateral so it's a Jeffery rushing touchdown. Either way, still counts. The Eagles rightfully go for a two-point conversion to make it a two-handed game and Sproles punches it in with a great run. Boom. Great call by Pederson. The Eagles are on a 29-3 run. Eagles 29, Washington 20.

THIRD QUARTER

Eagles 8th drive: Eagles get to 3rd-and-9 but no matter because Wentz looks like a fighter. Beauty. Wentz to Jackson on 3rd-and-4 for another first. Sanders runs for eight yards. Wentz to Ertz for a catch-and-run (Ertz YAC ?!) and the Eagles are at the 2-yard line. The offense is humming now!

Washington 8th drive: Keenum tunes it out deep and Jones is in coverage but the ball is JUST overthrown. Eagles catch a break there. Keenum's second down pass is dropped, which brings 3rd-and-10. Keenum's third down pass is incomplete thanks to tight coverage from Jones. Another three-and-out for Washington.

Eagles 7th drive: A 16-yard punt return from Sproles allows the Eagles to start at their own 47-yard line. Good field position. Wentz's 2nd-and-10 throw is dropped by Ertz to bring up 3rd-and-10. Wentz drops back on third down and airs it out deep – you guessed it – a wide open Jackson! Another deep bomb touchdown. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Wentz to Jackson connection is gonna be a problem for the Eagles' opponents. Eagles 21, Washington 20.

Washington 7th drive: Eagles defense gotta step up in the second half. Sidney Jones is replacing Douglas on the outside now. Fletcher Cox's big tackle for throws back up 3rd-and-20. Washington runs a screen that ends up short of the market. Great stop.

Eagles 6th drive: Sproles get the first carry of the second half, which leads to the lead for keys taken. Sanders takes a carry to bring up 3rd-and-5. The Eagles hand off to Sproles (!?) For his seventh touch and it's 4th-and-1. Again: what is this play calling? Wentz sneaks it for the first. Wentz hits Jeffery for a first down and then again to bring up 2nd-and-5. That's a connection to the team needs to get going. Another Sproles carry goes for a first down this time. And then another for a first down! Really making me eat my words. Sanders breaks off a nice jump that run the Eagles at the 3-yard line. Gotta finish that, rook! Sanders gets two carries as the Eagles are knocked back to the 5-yard line. Ugh. On 3rd-and-goal, Wentz dodges pressure and throws a strike to Jeffery in a tight window for a TOUCHDOWN. Really impressive ball there from No. 11. Big drive for the Birds. Washington 20, Eagles 14.

HALFTIME

Halftime show was a guy painting a picture of an eagle. So, literally watching paint dry. Fans had no reaction to the performance. Seems fitting.

SECOND QUARTER

Washington 6th drive: Cushion on 3rd-and-3 allows Washington to convert. Washington moves into field goal range on Keenum pass to McLaurin. Darby had a chance to make a play on the ball but … did not. Jernigan comes up wth a big sack to knock Washington out of field goal range. Big! But then Washington gets back with a quick completion and a dumb offside penalty by Derek Barnett with Washington lining up to spike. Too many stupid mistakes from this Eagles team. Washington makes the 48-yard field goal. Washington 20, Eagles 7.

Eagles 5th drive: Eagles take over their own 18-yard line with 2:27 left in the second quarter. Wentz's second pass is broken up by Josh Norman to bring up 3rd-and-10. The third down call is Jackson, who only picks up five yards. Pederson's not having a great day so far.

Washington 5th drive: Eagles defense could really use a turnover here. Washington gets to 3rd-and-3 from their own 32-yard line. Washington direct snaps to the running back goal Nigel Bradham stops it to bring up the fourth down. Washington lines up like they're gonna go for it but they do not. Punt instead.

Eagles 4th drive: Wentz to Alshon Jeffery on an out (is that allowed ?!) Wentz's floats to a ball to Dallas Going down the sideline but the tight end can not hold it. No matter because Wentz tunes it out deep to Jackson for a 51-yard deep TOUCHDOWN bomb. We all knew it was going to happen at some point. Washington 17, Eagles 7.

Washington 4th drive: Maddox back in the game. Washington at 3rd-and-7 from their own 17-yard line and Keenum's third down pass is … dropped. Eagles catch a break.

Eagles 3rd drive: Eagles run to Sproles on 3rd-and-1 and it's stopped for a 2-yard loss. What is it that play call? Why is the ball getting strength fed to Sproles? Fans at the Linc rightfully booing loudly.

Washington 3rd drive: Rasul Douglas burned deep on Terry McLaurin's 70-yard touchdown bomb from Keenum. Yikes! What is going on here. Washington 17, Eagles 0.

Eagles 2nd drive (continued): Jason Peters is shaken up but he's staying in the game. Hey, the aforementioned Howard appears! First a catch, then a run for a first down, then another run for six yards. Good little stretch there. Wentz throws short of the sticks to Sproles on third down to bring up 4th-and-2. Doug Pederson is going for it, of course. Wentz's fourth down pass is back to the end of the drive. Welp.

FIRST QUARTER

Eagles 2nd drive: Eagles really need to get something going here. Sproles getting a decent amount of work. Jordan Howard not playing much.

Washington 2nd drive: Vinny Curry makes a nice run stuff to bring up 3rd-and-8. Keenum completes a third down pass. Womp. Ronald Darby drops a pick. Gotta make that play, Darbs. Washington gets to 3rd-and-7 on the Eagles' 37-yard line. Can the Birds get a stop? Nope! Keenum has got you ready for you. Real great start here. Avonte Maddox is hurt so Sidney Jones is finally coming into the game. Washington gets to 3rd-and-6 and the Eagles' defense FINALLY gets a stop. It's about time. Washington settles for a 41-yard field goal. Maddox is headed to the locker room, by the way. Ugh. But wait! It's just cramps and he's likely to return. Washington 10, Eagles 0.

Eagles 1st drive: Time to see if the offense can answer. Carson Wentz's first pass is wide and incomplete. His next is a sharp completion to Jackson along the sideline for a first down. Boom. Just like we've seen from them in practice. Miles Sanders get the first carry and then it's Darren Sproles. Jackson gets shoved by Washington corner Quinton Dunbar and retaliates and naturally the refs only flag Jackson. Okay! Agholor can not bring in Wentz's pass on 3rd-and-17 and the Eagles have to punt.

Washington 1st drive: Washington starts at the 20-yard line after Josh Sweat makes a tackle on the opening kickoff. Ronald Darby and Rasul Douglas – not Sidney Jones – are the starting outside cornerbacks. Nigel Bradham and Zach Brown are the linebackers in nickel with Nathan Gerry coming in for base defense. Washington picks up two first downs with a mix of runs and passes. Washington gets to 3rd-and-2 at the Eagles' 48-yard line. Andrew Sendejo gets a hit on the face of a flatterer on Vernon Davis, who shakes up and goes 48 yards to the house. Not great, folks! Washington 7, Eagles 0.

Coin toss: Eagles win the corner toss and defer, as they usually do. Washngton's offense is up first.

Pregame introductions: Super loud cheers for DeSean Jackson. Welcome back to Philly, No. 10.
