STEUBENVILLE – Undefeated Windham took advantage of two quick touchdowns to spoil Catholic Central’s comeback on Saturday with a 36-6 win inside Harding Stadium.
The Bombers now 4-0 entered the first meeting between schools ranked 10th in the computer standings of Division VII, Region 25. With the loss, the Crusaders fell to 2-3.
“They won the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and in the end it was the difference”, central coach Anthony Agresta said. “The way we played tonight was disappointing. It’s week 5 and it was by far our worst effort.
“Give Windham credit. They are a much better football team than they looked in the movie. They were physical and tonight they were the best football team. No excuse on that side.
Visitors to Portage County only needed two games to score after taking the opening kickoff. Speedy senior Miki Jones had 13 yards on his first run, then ran 44 yards to the end zone. Jones also ran for the two-point conversion.
After the Crusaders fumbled on their first snap, the Bombers were back at Central 35. This time Jones went 6 yards. Powerful senior full-back James Hood made his way for two and it was 16-0 at Windham with 8:19 left in the first quarter.
Central responded on his next possession, walking 65 yards. The big play on the disc was a 28-yard pass from Andrew Dorsey to Tyler Ialenti. Dashon Seditz scored the touchdown on a 3-yard run.
Hood scored by one yard to start the second quarter. Windham had two chances to score extra points before half-time, but lost fumbles deep inside central territory. The Bombers were leading 22-6 at the break.
“We shot each other several times in the foot in the first half. Windham coach Jake Eye said. “We know the tradition here, we know these guys are preparing well and we know they are well trained. We have had the best week of training since I have been training here.
“Congratulations to our children for the way they have prepared this week. They were brave, tough and physical tonight. I think our looks there tonight surprised them a bit. They were two very good football teams. We knew what was at stake as they did. I’m just really proud of our guys.
A 6-yard run by Hood gave Windham a 30-6 lead halfway through the third. The OHSAA’s running clock rule came into effect minutes later when Lucas Chuchill caught a center pass and ran 70 yards for a score.
“They had athletes and if you take those kind of kids to the second level, they’re going to do plays,” said Agresta. “We didn’t do a good job of catching the ball when we threw it tonight. They were giving us things on the perimeter in the passing game, but you have to do the throws and receptions and we couldn’t do it. We were also injured with a few penalties (Central had a Dorsey touchdown due to a hold penalty).
“We didn’t play well tonight. We’ll have to go back and assess it. I think the game plan we had defensively was pretty solid, we didn’t execute it very well.
Offensively, they took out blocks and made plays. There was nothing we were trying to do offensively that I wouldn’t try to do again, but these kids were playing games. They just won the game physically tonight – absolutely. “
Windham finished with 263 rushing yards. Jones led the way with 147 in 16 races. Chase Eye contributed 79 out of nine trips and Hood finished with 28.
“We have a lot of speed in the backfield with Chase and Miki,” Says Coach Eye. “So we have the power with James. I think we are very difficult to defend in this regard.
“I think where we mislead people is up front. Our attacking front is strong. They get off the ball well, they are big, physical and not afraid. So kudos to our guys up front.
Dorsey finished with 60 rushing yards to lead the Crusaders. He also pitched for 99. Ialenti had five receptions for 59 yards.

Central faces another tall order this Saturday when it hosts 3-1 Barnesville at Harding Stadium.
“We have to play a lot better next week because we will have our hands full”, said Agresta. “We will continue to work and continue to focus on improving. Teams have bad weeks throughout the year.
“We thought we were getting into a position to play in a ball game that had some significance and just didn’t play well.”
Meanwhile, Windham will host the undefeated Ravenna Southeast, a Division V team on Friday.
“We’ve had a few escapes here and there tonight, but we’re going to clean that up this week,” Says Coach Eye. “It’s to the southeast and we have a tough job ahead of us. I hope we have another good week of training and are ready to go.
