Satellite measurements of the Earth's "skin temperature" have confirmed that global warming is heating up the planet.

The infrared sensitive system was used to record temperature trends from 2003 to 2017.

The satellite system, called Airs (infrared atmospheric sounder), records the temperature on the surface of the ocean, land and snow-covered regions.

His results have been compared with data from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, based on stations, for the analysis of surface temperature.

The results are published in the journal Environmental Research Letters.

Co-author Gavin Schmidt, also from the Goddard Institute, said, "Interestingly, our results revealed that surface-based datasets may underestimate temperature changes in the Arctic.

"This means that the warming that is happening at the poles could happen faster than previously thought."
