PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Health is adding a fourth state-run site for mass vaccinations against COVID-19 next week, this one in the East Valley.
The Chandler-Gilbert Community College distribution point, which operated as part of the Maricopa County vaccination program, will become a site of the Arizona Department of Health Services on March 3, Governor Doug Ducey announced Monday. .
It will initially run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and will increase to 24 hours a day when more vaccines become available, according to a press release.
Dose registration at the East Valley site will open March 1 at 9 a.m.
“An area with well over half of our state’s population will now have three state-run vaccination sites that will position Arizona to rapidly vaccinate large numbers of vaccines as vaccine stocks grow,” Arizona health director Dr. Cara Christ said in the statement.
“Arizona has proven that the state-recognized national model for these vaccination sites is scalable and transferable to other locations. By combining state resources with the support of partners, we can continue to get more doses into the arms of the Arizonans. “
Dignity Health operates the community college site with Maricopa County. As previously planned, the county will complete its work there on Saturday. On February 6, Dignity Health celebrated the delivery of 100,000 doses at the POD, located on Pecos Road, just west of Gilbert Road in Chandler.
The state health department will reopen the operation in partnership with the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, and the Maricopa County Community College District.
“Arizona has called on the federal government to provide our state with more doses of the vaccine,” Ducey said in the statement. “As the supply becomes available, we will be ready to administer the vaccine and protect the Arizonans.”
Last week, the existing vaccination operation at the University of Arizona was transformed into the third state-run site, the first in southern Arizona.
It joined the existing state-run venues at State Farm Stadium in Glendale and Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Only the State Farm Stadium site, which debuted on January 11, has so far offered 24/7 service.
