Over the weekend, two remote areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) reported Ebola cases, suggesting transmission chains hitherto unknown in the provinces of North and South Kivu.

According to Reuters, DRC officials today confirmed a new Ebola case in the militia-controlled Walikale remote territory, 95 kilometers northwest of Goma. Goma has recorded four cases of Ebola in the past 6 weeks and it is unclear whether the case in Walikale has had contact with other Ebola patients.

Reuters also reported that the DRC had confirmed a third case in the South Kivu region, which reported its first case late last week. South Kivu is more than 430 km from the epicenter of the epidemic. The first cases in South Kivu were a mother and a child who were probably exposed to Beni.

For nearly a year, the Ebola outbreak in the DRC – the second largest in history – has been contained in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri , along the eastern border of the country.

But this summer, the first cases in Goma and South Kivu in the DRC, as well as in Uganda, have shown that the virus may not be as content as expected.

WHO: 27 new cases in 3 days

According to the online scoreboard of the World Health Organization (WHO), 27 new cases of Ebola have been confirmed in the past three days, bringing the total of the outbreak at 2888.

A total of 387 suspected cases are under investigation and 21 new deaths have been recorded, bringing the total deaths to 1,934.

Beni and Mandima reported the highest number of cases in the last 21 days.
