HOOVER, Alabama – LSU football coach Ed Orgeron hasn’t made a decision between leaving Myles Brennan or Max Johnson, but he said he believes in both players and sees them as “championship quarters”.
Brennan, a senior, started LSU’s first three games last season, throwing for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns, before an abdominal injury sidelined him the rest of the year. In March, Brennan said he felt 100% healthy again.
Johnson, a freshman and son of former NFL quarterback Brad Johnson, only played meaningful snaps later in the year, appearing in his first game against Auburn on Halloween.
But Johnson ended up starting LSU’s last three games against Alabama, Florida and Ole Miss, leading the Tigers to a 2-1 record while throwing six touchdowns and one interception.
“Whoever wins will do a great job at LSU,” Orgeron said on Monday. “It will be a huge battle, and we’ll see what happens.”
Regardless of who wins the starting position, Orgeron is doing his best to quell unreasonable expectations.
As LSU returns to the same style of attack that helped him win the 2019 National Championship, bringing in Joe Brady disciple Jake Peetz as the offensive coordinator, Orgeron said he didn’t think that meant. that anyone should be looking for another Joe Burrow for quarterback.
In 2019, Burrow went from being an unknown parent to a Heisman Trophy winner and first overall pick, setting the SEC record for touchdowns along the way.
Whether it’s Brennan, Johnson or any college football quarterback, Orgeron simply said, “I don’t know if we’re going to see another Joe Burrow.”
“Whether or not it’s Max, Myles or Garrett [Nussmeier] can do it like Joe, I don’t expect that, “he said.” But I want to see the same type of games, I want to see the same type of tweaks that have been so successful for we.”
LSU, who broke a 5-5 record last year, is scheduled to kick off the season at UCLA on September 4.
