Eddie Money dies: rockers react

Eddie Money, the best-known singer for titles like "Two Tickets to Paradise" and "Take Me Home Tonight," died today at the age of 70.

The musician's family confirmed his death this morning in a statement provided to the Variety. "It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our loving father and husband," reads in part. "We can not imagine our world without him, we are grateful that he will live forever through his music."

The money was battling stage 4 esophageal cancer that had spread to the stomach and liver, a diagnosis that it revealed publicly last month.

Edward Joseph Mahoney, born in Brooklyn, moved to the Bay Area in 1968 and changed his name while pursuing a career as a musician. In San Francisco, he met the influence of concert promoter Bill Graham, who helped the debut artist win a contract with Columbia Records.

His first eponymous 1978 album will sell over 2 million copies, carried by the hits "Baby Hold On" and "Two Tickets to Paradise". During the next decade, he had successes like "Take Me Home Tonight" and "I Wanna Go Back".

When the news of Money's death began to spread this morning, various rockers began to share their thoughts and memories of the deceased musician throughout the day.

REO Speedwagon leader Kevin Cronin recalled a recent meeting with the singer: "When I called Eddie Money to join us at Thousand Oaks for a benefit show earlier this year he immediately joined us. Eddie's presence made each piece happier. He then recounted that he had fought against cancer and that he had won. But he also said he was not completely out of the woods. His mind was good and he was joking, as always. I am sick of the news of his death. Too sad. Our condolences go to his wife Laurie who has always been by his side and his children that Eddie so loved. REO will be adding "Two Tickets to Paradise", the song we've been playing with Eddie so many times over the years on tour together, at our Kaboo Festival set tonight.

Other artists – like Paul Stanley, Slash, Foreigner and Dee Snider – shared their thoughts on Twitter. Here is a selection.
