The candid photos on this page were taken when Eddie Olcyzk came to town on September 22 for what was the 11th presentation of the Herald-Star Lecture Series presented by Eastern Gateway Community College.

Prior to his speech in the auditorium at Steubenville High School, Olcyzk was the guest of a relaxed VIP reception held at Froehlich’s Classic Corner in Steubenville with owners Greg and Debbie Froehlich as hosts.

It was the opportunity to take photos with the Chicago native who has ties to the area – his stepfather, Tom Vickers, was born in Wheeling and raised in Martins Ferry, the hometown of the mother-in-law of ‘Olczyk – and get an autographed copy of his book, “Beat the odds in hockey and in life”, which he wrote with Perry Lefko.

Although Olcyzk is well known for his career in the National Hockey League and his work as a leading analyst and commentator for hockey and thoroughbreds, he is also a cancer survivor, having received in 2017 diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. He works to educate and support those in the midst of this battle with their loved ones.

Joining the Herald-Star, Weirton Daily Times, Eastern Gateway Community College, Franciscan University of Steubenville, WVU Medicine – Wheeling Hospital and the Wheeling Nailers as event sponsors were the County Chamber of Commerce of Jefferson, WesBanco, Dan Stephens State Farm, Classic Corner by Froehlich and WTRF-TV.

Special support was provided by EM-Media, Steel Valley Regional Transit Authority and Steubenville High School.
