Ten days after a road rage incident on Interstate 35 in Edmond ended in a dramatic accident, the suspected driver was arrested on a criminal charge.

Steven Coughran, 40, faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and child neglect.

District Attorney David Prater said he was directly involved in the case.

“I’m not going to lie, I was an idiot,” Coughran told a soldier at the scene. “You know how good testosterone is.”

Court documents allege Coughran’s 4-year-old was in the vehicle as he intentionally walked towards Brett Powers’ SUV.

“It was shocking, and it was even more shocking that the highway patrolman didn’t step in and lay additional charges at that time,” Powers said.

Following the Aug. 10 collision, Coughran was fined for speeding and improper lane change before being cleared by OHP to leave the scene, according to Powers.

“We are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the soldier’s investigation,” OHP spokeswoman Sarah Stewart said on Wednesday.

Witnesses who filmed the crash said they remained at the scene and told the soldier working on the crash that they recorded the incident for miles.

“It was (Coughran’s) full intention to smash us to the side and lead us into the concrete barrier,” Powers said.

According to court documents, Coughran met with investigators four days after the crash, telling them he had previously been angry while driving.

“We all have,” he said. “I grew up in California. It’s a bit common there, that’s for sure. But I never thought of hitting someone with my vehicle. “

A three-year search of the DPS files shows that Coughran has a good driving record.

He was posted on a $ 25,000 bond.

News 9 has filed for open recording for video of the soldier’s initial instigation into the incident. A spokeswoman for the department said it should be available soon.
