OSWEGO, NY – Two horses euthanized last week in the cities of Albion and Amboy have been tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis, according to the Oswego County Health Department. .
This brings to four the total number of horses infected by the EEA this summer in Oswego County. Two other horses died of EEE last month in Amboy and West Monroe.
EEE is a rare but potentially fatal virus transmitted by mosquitoes. Humans and horses are at risk of EEE through the bite of infected mosquitoes.
Since 1971, eight deaths of human EEE have been reported in Onondaga and Oswego Counties.
Although there is no EEE vaccine available for humans, there is a vaccine for horses.
On August 20, Oswego County sprayed pesticides to reduce the number of mosquitoes.
"Aerial spraying has been effective in reducing mosquito populations, but it does not eliminate all mosquitoes," said Oswego's director of public health, Jiancheng Huang, in a statement. "It is always very important that people continue their efforts to prevent mosquito exposure."
The department advised the population to use an insect repellent and take other precautions on the outside to avoid mosquito bites.
