Eight children were tied for the National Spelling Bee on Thursday, an unprecedented end to the 92-year-old competition.
For over three and a half hours, players aged 12 to 14 have proven that they can handle almost anything the competition has been able to do, confidently tracing letters on their palms and correctly identifying the roots in one language foreign. Thursday's final was the fourth day of the bee, which drew 562 attackers from all 50 states.
Sixteen children from this talented group qualified for the finals at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, Maryland, many of whom have experience in bees from previous years. After 20 rounds, eight remained and were named co-champions; Bees' spelling executives said that they would run out of words.
The winners are Rishik Gandhasri, Erin Howard, Saketh Sundar, Shruthika Padhy, Sohum Sukhatankar, Abhijay Kodali, Christopher Serrao and Rohan Raja.
The first place in the spelling contest wins a prize of $ 50,000 as well as reference books and a deposit of $ 2,500. In recent years, two competitors tied for first place and each won the award.
