The lawyers of the drug dealer Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman are demanding a new trial in light of what they described as misconduct of the jury during his trial for drug conspiracy.

Guzman's defense team announced Friday that it was considering requesting a hearing on the evidence "to determine the extent of the fault".

The filing took place two days after VICE News announced that several jurors had mishandled media reports about the three-month trial, despite repeated instructions from a federal judge to avoid coverage media of the procedure.

The US Attorney's Office in Brooklyn declined to comment.

Guzman was sentenced last week for conspiracy to murder and drug trafficking. He faces life imprisonment when sentenced in June.

His lawyers also requested an extra month to prepare their motion for a new trial based on allegations of misconduct by the jury.
