EL PASO, Texas – Hospitals in El Paso are expected to receive nearly 7,000 Covid-19 vaccines during the first distribution later this month, according to a Texas State Department health services list released Friday.
Gov. Greg Abbott said earlier this week that a first shipment of vaccine will likely arrive in Texas during the week of December 14, with a second shipment scheduled for January.
State health officials said on Friday that the first allocation of more than 224.00 doses of a vaccine made by Pfizer would be shipped to 109 hospitals in 34 counties.
Here is the breakdown for El Paso County …
- The university medical center will receive more than 2,900 doses.
- Providence East Campus hospitals will receive 975 doses, as well as the same number of doses for Memorial Campus.
- Del Sol and Las Palmas medical centers will each receive 975 doses as well.
Texas health officials said on Friday that nursing home residents and healthcare workers would be on the front lines to access the first round of vaccine doses.
Meanwhile, a recently completed survey of the city of El Paso shows great interest in the vaccine among residents of El Paso. Of more than 4,000 people surveyed, 86% said they would be interested in getting the vaccine.
Public Health Department Director Angela Mora also said the city has purchased five buildings with federal funding from the CARES Act to use for the response to Covid-19, four of which will involve clinics for testing and vaccine distribution. The fifth building will be an intervention center for epidemiologists, the local working group on viruses and contact tracers.
This week, Texas passed 9,000 hospital patients with Covid-19 for the first time since the summer. Texas reported more than 13,000 confirmed cases on Friday and 255 more deaths. The virus is responsible for more than 22,200 deaths in Texas, which is the second highest number of deaths in the country.
