An elderly Spanish woman stunned her family when she showed up to her nursing home – more than a week after learning she had died from COVID-19.
Relatives of Rogelia Blanco have been told that the 85-year-old woman died of the virus on January 13 and her funeral was to be held the next day, according to La Voz de Galicia newspaper. They were unable to attend due to protocols in place during the pandemic.
But on Saturday – 10 days later – she returned to the house in Xove, in northern Spain. Her husband, who also lives there, was in shock.
“I couldn’t believe it,” her husband told the newspaper. “I was crying after my wife died.
The confusion arose when Blanco and other residents who tested positive for COVID-19 were moved to another house, the Os Gozos Residence in Pereiro de Aguiar, about 220 km away, for specialized treatment at the end of the month latest.
The deceased woman was actually Blanco’s roommate.
“Among the elderly transferred, there were two women who were assigned the same room,” the San Rosendo Foundation, which manages the Xove retirement home, told the newspaper. “A misidentification during the transfer process from Xove to Pereiro de Aguiar led to the death of one of them who was certified on January 13, although the identity was wrongly assigned.
The foundation expressed regret and called the confusion an “unfortunate incident,” according to the newspaper.
“This is a one-time event, among the more than 100 transfers that have been made since last December to Os Gozos,” the statement said.
A court was told to reverse the error.
