Election 2021: Legislative district 37

The 37th district includes 13 communities in Bergen County: Alpine, Bogota, Cresskill, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Leonia, Northvale, Palisades Park, Rockleigh, Teaneck and Tenafly.

Half of registered voters are Democrats, about 14% are Republicans, and most of the rest are unaffiliated.

Three candidates are vying for the Senate seat that majority leader Loretta Weinberg is leaving. MP Gordon Johnson, an Englewood consultant, is the Democratic candidate. Michael koontz, a freelance writer living in Hackensack, is the Republican candidate. Independent Glenn coley Englewood operates under the slogan “New Directions”.

Five candidates are vying for two vacant seats in the Assembly. Democratic candidates are Shama Haider, director of development of an arts education organization of Tenafly, and Ellen Park, a former Englewood Cliffs town councilor. Republicans are Edward Durfee Jr., a man from Northvale who is a head of state in the anti-government militia group Oath Keepers who law enforcement officials say was involved in the January 6 riot at the United States Capitol, and Patrick perley, a Teaneck man and US Navy veteran. Independent Natacha Pannell, a woman from Englewood who co-founded a nonprofit that raises awareness about violence against people of color, goes by the slogan “Children & Seniors First”.
