Of all the episodes of Saved by the Bell, What stands out from Elizabeth Berkley – and many fans of the show – is where her character, the studious and perfectionist Jessie Spano, becomes addicted to caffeine pills.

You know the scene: Jessie’s best friend Zack Morris (played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar) walks into her room and prevents her from taking a pill. She responds by singing what must be the most famous line of Saved by the Bell story: “I’m so excited! I’m really excited! ”She then melts dramatically, as the scene indicates, bursts into tears, saying,“ I’m so… scared.

Well, the truth is, it was all played out on candy, Berkley revealed this week in an interview on The exchange rate. “They were Red Hots,” she told host Monét X Change.

But while the pills were fake, the drama was real. Berkley remembers being amazed at how impactful the episode had been, although she admits that the “Jessie’s Song” script stands out above the rest.

“When we shot it Mark-Paul and I were so excited to have something a little juicier, because we had been really trained actors and, you know, we did this light comedy,” Berkley said. “Basically the biggest problem was, who’s going to ask who to dance? And here’s that scenario where we were like, ‘Oh my God, we’ve got to go.’ I think because we had that chemistry, which is why she kind of has this interesting force in pop culture. A lot of real emotions arose. It was real. It was raw. And very adolescent. And we went there for sure.

Today, 30 years after it was first broadcast on November 3, 1990, the moment lives on in countless memes and Berkley’s encounters with fans.

“I could never have known that for years and years people would come to me and say, ‘I’m so excited. I’m so afraid.’ Right? ”Berkley said.

And she doesn’t seem to care, at least not until she can joke about it.

Berkley is one of several members of the sitcom’s original cast who appear in the updated version of the series which now airs on Peacock.
