Elon Musk is again in search of "the nuclear weapon of Mars" – BGR

If there is one thing you can say about Elon Musk, it is that he has never lacked ambition. He founded several successful companies and, with SpaceX, he advanced science by reducing entry costs for satellite launches and opening up new opportunities for researchers.

It also seems to have the mission of making the human colony on Mars a reality. He insists that it is possible to make Mars more similar to Earth as long as we can release the carbon dioxide trapped in Martian ice, rock and soil. Scientists do not quite agree with this line of thought, but a new tweet from Musk suggests that he is once again ready to assert that "neutralizing Mars" is a good idea.

Musk's tweet refers to the theory that, by dropping one or more large bombs on the Mars poles, the CO2 trapped in the ice would be released, which would give a boost to the Martian atmosphere:

The atmosphere of Mars is very thin today, but its density is less than 1% of that of the Earth. Making the planet's atmosphere denser could help it retain heat and bring it a little closer to its habitability for humans. However, previous research has suggested that the bombing of the poles of the planet would not release enough CO2 to be worth it. Elon Musk publicly disapproved.

Why did the SpaceX boss decide to come back to this issue, but he's used to saying that everything he thinks will spark a strong reaction on Twitter. Oh, and apparently he hopes sell shirts as well as.

In any case, no space agency is ready to begin even the preliminary planning of a crew mission, much less the long-term efforts to change the climate of the red planet. If this happens, the bombs could play a role or not. In the meantime, scientists will probably argue that throwing nuclear bombs at other planets is a bad idea.
