Elon University women’s football team equaled the University of Delaware Blue Hens 1-1 in his Colonial Athletic Association game two of the season.

The game was doubled in overtime as neither team was able to claim victory after 110 minutes of play.

The Head Coach Neil payne said he was happy with the team’s movement and said the team did a good job retaining and moving the ball. He said the team’s biggest problem was not being aggressive enough on the baseline.

Payne said the team will look to finish their scoring chances and not give up on goals in the future.

“We’re going to get down to business,” Payne said. “We cannot fault our energy and our efforts. A lot of players have played really well today.

At the end of the first half, the score remained 0-0 with Elon edging Delaware on penalties three to two. Both teams picked up the pace in the second half, accumulating 17 shooting attempts during the period.

Delaware’s Katie Hackley scored the game’s opening goal in the 64th minute, but the senior midfielder Carson Jones responded quickly for Elon in the 66th minute, scoring soon after a free kick from Lily Harke to tie the game, 1-1.

After a pair of 10-minute overtime periods, the game went scoreless. As Elon edged Delaware on shots 15-12, it wasn’t enough to win the game.

Jones said the team could improve by finding ways to convert their settings into goals, but were proud of the team’s offensive performances in the second half and overtime.

“We had so many chances and played really well,” said Jones.

Elon is still chasing his second win over Delaware in program history, as the Phoenixes are now just 1-4-2 all-time against the Blue Hens. The only victory came in 2017.

Elon’s women’s football team continues its lecture program against College of Charleston on Thursday, October 7 at 7 p.m.
