In March, Elon’s volleyball season ended with two losses to the College of Charleston Cougars. However, the Phoenix avenged those losses on Friday, September 17, winning a four road wins against the Cougars in his first Colonial Athletic Association game.
After losing the first set, Elon comfortably handled the next two sets and pulled out a tough fourth set to complete the victory.
Senior passer Haylie Clark posted a double-double for the Phoenix with a career-high 52 assists and 11 digs. Clark had all but four of the team’s 56 assists, and more than the College of Charleston’s 44 combined.
This is the second game this season that Clark has had at least 40 assists, as she set her previous career record with 42 vs. Virginia Tech August 28.
The Phoenix had an efficient offensive play, beating the Cougars in assists, kills and batting percentage. Senior outside hitter Lea Daniel recorded 22 wins for Elon, putting him down to just three wins against 1,000 for his career. Outdoor hitter freshman Sydney love continued his stellar game with 11 kills and a senior center tackle Nathalie Cummins added 10 kills to eclipse 300 for his career.
While the Phoenixes had an effective offensive outing, they also shone in defense. Junior intermediate ascender Jenn krzeminski tied his season high in blocks with seven, while the junior libero Jordan gower led the Phoenix with 21 digs, a season high.
With the win, the Phoenix improved to 6-5 in the season. The team will progress to the CAA game on Saturday, September 18 when they face the Cougars again. The match must start at 4 p.m.
