Ohio has 3,445 new cases. … According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 56% of the total United States population (65.4% of those aged 12 and over eligible) are fully vaccinated and more than 700,000 Americans have died from Covid. … Hairdresser and makeup artist Marc Pilcher, who won an Emmy for his work on the Netflix series “Bridgerton,” dies. Pilcher was double vaccinated, tested negative multiple times, and had no underlying health issues, reports Variety. He was also nominated for an Oscar for his work on “Mary Queen of Scots”. He was 53 years old.

Ohio reports 4,212 cases. … The postal codes of Medina, North Ridgeville and Painesville have the highest number of cumulative cases of Covid in northeastern Ohio. Medina’s 44,256 topped the list with 7,560 cases in total, a rate of 12 cases per 100 people. … The European Medicines Agency is supporting a recall of the Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna coronavirus vaccines for certain people. … Mayor of Baltimore Brandon M. Scott (photo above, bottom right) positive tests. The Democrat has been vaccinated. … The New Zealand government recognizes what most countries did a long time ago: It can no longer get rid of the coronavirus completely. Since the start of the pandemic, New Zealand has pursued an unusual zero-tolerance approach through tight lockdowns and aggressive contact tracing. But the epidemic has grown to more than 1,300 cases, with 29 more detected today.

Texas, Idaho, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arkansas and North Carolina have 15% or less of their critical care capacity available to patients, according to the Department of Health and Social Services. And according to the Centers for Disease Control, 645 children have died from Covid in the United States. … Booster shots exceed first Covid inoculations, according to CNN, citing CDC data: On average 384,963 doses of the booster vaccine are given daily, while about 281,303 people receive their first dose each day and about 292 927 people are fully vaccinated each day.

October 7

Ohio has 6,310 cases. The state recorded an average of 560.5 cases per 100,000 population this week, according to the Ohio Department of Health. … A wave of cases among students and staff at Cincinnati public schools once again reported the district with the most new infections in Ohio in the state’s latest weekly update from the state Department of Health. The district reported 511 new student cases and 88 new staff cases this week. This is the second week in a row that the district has reported the most new infections in Ohio. … A study published today by the medical journal Pediatrics indicates that in the 15-month pandemic of nearly 19 months, more than 120,000 American children have lost a parent or grandparent who was the primary provider of financial support and care. Another 22,000 children suffered the death of a secondary caregiver – for example, a grandparent who provided housing but not other basic needs of a child. More than half of children who have lost a primary caregiver are black or Hispanic, two groups that make up about 40% of the American population.

October 8

CNN says Pfizer and BioNTech have said they are seeking emergency use authorization from the United States Food and Drug Administration for their vaccine for 5 to 11 year olds. It would be the first Covid vaccine for young children. … Reuters reports that the prevalence of infections in England rose to around one in 70 people during the week ending October 2, according to the UK Office for National Statistics. This is its highest level since August.
