Fortnite Developer Epic says that for 2021, the competitive gaming scene will have a $ 20 million prize pool. That’s a step up from last year’s total of $ 17 million – although not as massive as the 2019 World Cup, where $ 30 million was at stake.
The news comes as Epic provided details on the final season of the Fortnite Champion Series, the highest level of competition in the game. The developer previously said all competitions will take place online, and today he revealed more details on the schedule: Qualifying will begin on February 4, the final starting March 12. In a nod to the overall nature of the game, there will also be three separate new shows with commentary in French, German and Spanish.
There are a number of other format and notation changes; you can check out the Epic blog post for the full rundown. “Our overall goal is to create better consistency throughout the year and tie the 2021 seasons together for a more cohesive experience,” says Epic.
As for the prize pool, there will be four FNCS seasons in 2021, with a total of $ 3 million in prize money each. But Epic says there are additional tournaments going on. “We also have plans for mid- and end-of-year competitions where we will bring together the top performing FNCS players from each region in several competitive formats,” says the developer. The remaining $ 8 million will serve as cash prizes for these yet to be determined tournaments.
Meanwhile, earlier today, Epic revealed a new partnership that will see 23 different professional football teams featured in the game.
