Sarah Thomas will become the first woman to officiate in a Super Bowl after being named to the seven-person crew for the February 7 game.
The National Football League announced Tuesday that Thomas would be the judge on the ground in a group led by referee Carl Cheffers.
NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent said: “Sarah Thomas has made history once again as the first female official of the Super Bowl.
“Her elite performance and commitment to excellence have earned her the right to officiate the Super Bowl. Congratulations to Sarah for this well-deserved honor.”
This is the latest milestone in Thomas’ career after the 47-year-old became the first woman to officiate in a major college football game and college bowling game before being named the NFL’s first official woman when ‘she was hired in 2015.
Cheffers, a 21-season NFL veteran, will umpire his second Super Bowl after being in charge of the New England Patriots 34-28 win over the Atlanta Falcons at Super Bowl LI in 2017.
The two teams for this year’s competition will be known after Sunday’s conference championships.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will take on the Green Bay Packers in the NFC and the defending Kansas City Chiefs champion will host the Buffalo Bills in the AFC.
