Within three weeks, the Red Sox went from a playoff blockage to a major question mark.
Frustration boils in Boston after the Red Sox were swept aside by the Yankees in Tuesday’s doubles program, sending the former leaders AL East to third place and out of the playoff picture in the middle of a 6-13 spiral.
“It’s frustrating that we aren’t playing the way we are able to,” manager Alex Cora said after the Red Sox were 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position on Tuesday. “It has been going on for a while in a way, the attack is not where we want to be.”
The Red Sox lost an 8.5-game lead in AL East and now lag the Rays by five games in the division.
In that brutal streak, the Red Sox have won just two wins in 13 games against the Rays, Yankees and Blue Jays and have been outscored by 30 points in those competitions.
But there is hope for Boston in the form of its schedule. After the series finale in the Bronx, the Red Sox have a six-game homestand against the terrible Rangers and Twins.
Nine of their last 14 games are against the humble Nationals and Orioles.
“It’s a fun summer and we’re playing meaningful games,” said Cora. “But we have to be better… we have to play better. It is essential.
