Escaped snake found in neighbor's washing machine in Illinois: "I was totally scared"

A woman from Illinois had a shock Wednesday opening her washing machine to find a snake inside.

"I closed the lid and started shouting," Sanela Kamencic, of Evanston, in NBC, told NBC 5 in Illinois.

"I was totally upset," she added. "How did a snake come into the house without talking about the washer?"

The snake was brought to the Chicago Exotics Animal Hospital by Evanston Police and Animal Control Officer Jason Pound.

"I could feel it and I could tell it had gone through a cycle," Pound told NBC 5. "It smelled like Downy."

It turns out that the Wheat Snake – called Penelope – was the escaped animal of a 12 year old neighbor. The WBBM radio station announced that Penelope had been missing for three days.

"Surprisingly, the snake looks very good and is very brave," said veterinarian Dr. Melissa Giese at the station.

Penelope and her owner have since been reunited.
