In recent years, we have seen many references to a mysterious new generation Fuchsia operating system developed by Google. We say "mysterious" because Google has not yet come out and has not specified what it was, or why it is developing another operating system while it's already has Android and Chrome OS. Will Fuchsia OS replace one or the other, or maybe both? Google finally answered this question, and the answer is no.
All we really knew so far is that Fuchsia OS is an open source project. You can even play with an experimental version in your browser, on GitHub, where it landed for the first time in 2016. This is only a rough demonstration, however, and does not really offer anything substantial nor on the operating system nor on Google's goal.

On Google I / O 2019, however, the boss of Android and Chrome, Hiroshi Lockheimer, offered interesting information.

"We are looking at what could be a new operating system, and so I know that people are rather excited by saying," Oh, that's the new Android "or" This is the new Chrome OS " "Fuchsia is really not about it. Fuchsia is about improving operating systems and integrating elements of Fuchsia with other products, "Lockheimer said.

In other words, Google does not develop Fuchsia OS as a replacement for Android or Chrome OS, or at least that is not the goal at the moment. So what is the purpose, then? Lockheimer also explained that Fuchsia OS allows Google to experiment with different form factors. So we could potentially see it on things like VR headsets, smart home devices, or anything else.

Later during the event, Lockheimer provided a little more context, pointing to the category of the Internet of Things, according to 9to5Google.

"It's not just phones and computers, but in the world of IoT, more and more devices require operating systems, new operations, and more. I think there is a lot of room for several operating systems with different strengths and specializations, and Fuchsia is listening, "he said.

There are still many things that we do not know about Fuchsia OS, although, for the moment, we can forget the idea that it will supplant Android or Chrome OS. Unless something changes, it's not the plan or direction that Google intends to go.
