Police spent several hours on Saturday searching for the suspect, Clinton Robert Hurley, after claiming he attacked the deputy who was treating him that morning under an arrest warrant. Hurley then escaped, police said.
A colleague had found the deputy unconscious and bleeding from the face, according to Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone. Penzone did not say exactly how the injuries occurred.
Hurley took off in the deputy’s vehicle, crashing through the door to the premises of the sheriff’s office in Avondale, police said.
Police said the suspect later hijacked a different vehicle from another driver, investigators told CNN affiliate KTVK.
At around 6:30 p.m., police received a call about a shootout in the Tonopah area involving the escaped suspect and a landlord, Penzone said.
The sheriff said the suspect and the owner had a history of conflict.
Area deputies and tactical units located the injured suspect and he was taken to hospital.
“It is with a sense of relief that I express to you that I am happy to know that he is off our streets,” said Penzone.
According to the sheriff, the deputy’s status has not changed and he remains on life support.
Hurley has yet to be charged in the alleged incidents on Saturday.
It was not clear on Sunday whether he had a lawyer.
Arizona Department of Corrections records show Hurley was released from prison last December after serving six years following his conviction for attempted child sexual assault.
