Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed decided to reinstate about 42 university professors from Addis Ababa who were fired in 1993.

Dr. Tilaye Gete, who is the Minister of Education, initiated the reinstatement of the dismissed university professors. On the basis of a state media report, EBC, Tilaye's intention was to "forgive" teachers who were fired for an inappropriate decision.

Abiy Ahmed's decision was unexpected because he seems to be accusing the government; "It's up to us to ask for forgiveness. They should be reinstated if they wish."

The lectures, including the late Professor Asrat Woldeyes, who was also a prominent Ethiopian surgeon, were dismissed with a direct order from the Prime Minister of the time, Meles Zenawi, for alleged reasons of competence. It was widely accepted, however, that the referral of the speakers was a politically motivated decision, as the government of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was engaged in an ideological war against anything reminiscent of Ethiopia.

The current Ethiopian Prime Minister is clearly apologetic

The Prime Minister's consensus and consultative style of leadership keep him busy. He holds an advisory meeting after the other with leaders and stakeholders from various fields.

Although Ethiopia has been able to open dozens of new universities in the past two decades, the quality of education has given rise to a major concern. This is what seems to have required meeting with lecturers from all Ethiopian universities. For the Ethiopian People's Prime Minister, poor governance and sporadic conflicts and violence across the country are manifestations of challenges in the education system.

He stresses that knowledge and academic freedom are prerequisites for free thinking in higher education institutions. He also stressed that competent teachers and quality education are the keys to achieving the goals in the education sector.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is expected to take reform measures in the education sector. Like borkena on Facebook and regularly receive news from Ethiopian News. In addition, you can get news from Ethiopia by following us on twitter @zborkena
