Shenmue 1 & 2 remasters will be locked at 30 fps

The Shenmue and Shenmue II remasters will be locked at 30 fps. According to Sega, this is the result of "coded badumptions" embedded in the original versions of the games, which left no room for scaling remasters up to 60 fps.

Shenmue and Shenmue II were released respectively in 1999 and 2001 for the Sega Dreamcast. Shenmue II was brought to the original Xbox in 2002, and it is this version of the game that has been remastered because it offers a handful of advantages over the Dreamcast version. In a SEGA FAQ, a question asking if the games "across the engine, game code and scripts, there are badumptions coded on a fixed refresh rate of 30Hz, so the game must run at 30Hz. " This is a slightly flimsy explanation, especially when you consider that fans of the series worked on how to run Shenmue at 60 fps on Dreamcast for several years now.

Shenmue's remastering date is August 20th (August 21st in Europe). The remastered version of the game will offer a choice of voice track in either English or Japanese, as well as the ability to perform Shenmue backups to Shenmue II, and a modern controller support.
