Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed decided to reinstate about 42 university professors from Addis Ababa who were fired in 1993.
Dr. Tilaye Gete, who is the Minister of Education, initiated the reinstatement of the dismissed university professors. On the basis of a state media report, EBC, Tilaye's intention was to "forgive" teachers who were fired for an inappropriate decision.
Abiy Ahmed's decision was unexpected because he seems to be accusing the government; "It's up to us to ask for forgiveness. They should be reinstated if they wish."
The lectures, including the late Professor Asrat Woldeyes, who was also a prominent Ethiopian surgeon, were dismissed with a direct order from the Prime Minister of the time, Meles Zenawi, for alleged reasons of competence. It was widely accepted, however, that the referral of the speakers was a politically motivated decision, as the government of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was engaged in an ideological war against anything reminiscent of Ethiopia.
The current Ethiopian Prime Minister is clearly apologetic
He revealed his intention to reinstate lecturers today at a meeting with more than 3,000 professors and university professors of all Ethiopian Universities
