ADDIS ABABA- The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MEFCC) is planning the worst invasive woody-prosopis plant for a better use of the curse in blessing.

MEFCC National Biosafety Notice Getnet Worku told the Ethiopian Herald that Prosopis, the most invasive plant in the world, a fast-growing, evergreen tree is widely invading certain areas of afar nations, from the south , nationalities and peoples (SNNP) and Somalis.

He said that the MEFCC had planned to remove the species by making it usable in the form of charcoal, biofuel and organic fertilizer by breaking it down. Prosopis affects the ecosystem, animals and the human being in general. It mainly affects plants by dominating the area and suppressing native plants such as acacia and enclosing them quickly and in animals.

He added that the ministry aspires to work with states that suffer from prosopis and will send teams to conduct research on how to best protect enduring areas. He also works diligently to find funds to eradicate the invasive plant in one way or another.

States must play a vital role because it is impossible to ensure the protection of all at the federal level, he added. it provides projects and funds to the states to avoid the worst invasive invasive plant.

He also informed the original source of the prosopis that alien species were intentionally imported by thinking only of its benefits without side effects.

Prosopis Introduced in Ethiopia in the late 1970s, on purpose, to meet the challenge of desertification in arid and semi-arid East African, from Mexico and from South America. Historically, Prosopis was planted in Dire Dawa and extended to the Afar, Somali and Harrar states, he added.
