The Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has appointed former Ethiopian Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn, to lead a mission of election observation to Zimbabwe.
Election takes place on July 30, 2018 Outgoing President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who came to power last November after the dismissal of leader Robert Mugabe, is running for president.
The African Union deployed the mission following an invitation from the Government and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission. Statement of Thursday
The former Ethiopian Prime Minister will visit Harare after ten days
The European Union has also deployed an election observation mission to observe the elections in Zimbabwe.
The overall goal of the AU Observer Mission is to promote democracy and enhance public confidence in electoral processes in AU member states, added the statement.
