Kenya: 35 Ethiopians accused of illegal residence

Thirty-five Ethiopian nationals were accused of being in the country illegally.

Illegal immigrants, who were arrested Friday at the Buna Shopping Center, were presented at the Wajir courthouse on Monday.

The immigrants told the resident magistrate of Wajir Mugendi Nyaga that they were fleeing clashes between border communities at the border of the regional state of Oromia in Ethiopia and the southern region of the country.

The clashes lasted for months and displaced thousands of people

They were each fined 50,000 shillings or one month in prison

The magistrate ordered that they be all repatriated to Ethiopia after the payment of the fine or the end of their sentence of imprisonment

14 days to appeal.
