KARACHI : The second anniversary of the famous philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi was observed on Sunday.
Abdul Sattar Edhi was the founder of the Edhi Foundation, a non-profit welfare program in Pakistan. The Edhi Foundation runs an extensive network of homeless shelters, orphanages, rehab centers and animal shelters across the country. The Edhi Foundation has become famous for leading the largest network of volunteer ambulances in the world.
Edhi, born in 1928, emigrates to Pakistan in 1947 with his family and devotes his life to the poor from the age of 20. he was himself penniless in Karachi. In 1951, Edhi opened a free dispensation under the Edhi Foundation. What began as a free clinic in 1951, has become the largest charity organization in Pakistan.
In his own words, Edhi "begged for donations" at the beginning of his work and "people gave". Edhi started with a single ambulance that he drove himself. Today, the Edhi Foundation has 2,400 ambulances and three air ambulances spread across the country. In 1997, the Edhi Foundation entered Guinness World Records as "the largest organization of volunteer ambulances".
The Edhi Foundation also operates more than 300 wellness centers that function as kitchens, rehabilitation homes, women's shelters and abandoned children. and clinics for the mentally handicapped. The Edhi Foundation also runs eight ambulatory hospitals, a children's adoption center and several morgues.
Edhi was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1986 and was honored with the Nishan-e-Imtiaz in 1989. Edhi has also been recognized nationally and internationally for his selfless service for the cause of the year. humanity.
In 2006, the Pakistan Institute of Business Administration (IBA) awarded an honorary doctor of doctorate degree in social service management for its services. In September 2010, Edhi also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bedfordshire.
In 2013, doctors told Edhi that his kidneys had failed and that he would survive dialysis until the end of his life. Edhi died on July 8, 2016 in Karachi after a prolonged illness.
