Pakistan remembers Edhi on the occasion of his second anniversary of death

LAHORE: Pakistan marks the second anniversary of the death of philanthropist and world-renowned social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi on Sunday.

Founder of the Edhi Foundation, Edhi became famous for leading the largest network of volunteer ambulances in the world. . The Edhi Foundation also runs shelters for the homeless, animal shelters, detox centers and orphanages across Pakistan.

Born on February 28, 1928 in Gujrat before the partition, his family emigrated to Pakistan in 1947 and dedicated his life to the poor and needy.

The Edhi Foundation owns 2,400 ambulances and three air ambulances across the country. The organization has been listed at Guinness World Records as "Largest Volunteer Organization of Ambulance".

During his lifetime, Abdul Sattar Edhi has received several awards for his hard work in the cause of humanity, both national and international. He received the 1986 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in Manila, Philippines also known as the Asian Noble. He also received the Lenin Peace Prize and the Balzan Prize in Italy

In 2006, the Institute of Business Administration of Pakistan (IBA) awarded an honorary doctorate in Social Services Management for his services. In September 2010, Edhi also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bedfordshire. In 1989, he received the Nishan-e-Imtiaz from the Government of Pakistan

Edhi breathed his last on July 8, 2016 at the age of 88 in Karachi after a prolonged illness.
