Although the Windows platform has been revised and updated several times over the years, some of the most popular proprietary applications on the operating system have not received the same treatment . One of these applications is Notepad, but after being ignored for years, it will finally have some new features in the coming months.
In a blog this week, Dona Sarkar and Brandon LeBlanc, employees of the Windows Insider program, shared a full list of updates that will feature in the latest version of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build, with more options login, changes to Windows Ink and a host of enhancements for Microsoft Edge, PDF Edge Drive and Windows Defender Application Guard.
Build 17713, which is now available to all Windows Insiders in Fast Ring, will give Notebook users the ability to search and replace wrap-around files for the first time. Notepad will also remember the previously entered values and status of all checkboxes and fill them automatically when you open the search dialog box. Also, if you highlight a word or phrase and then open the search dialog, everything you have underlined will automatically be filled.
The updated Notepad also adds the zoom. You can either navigate the menu and select View> Zoom, or use Ctrl + Plus, Ctrl + Minus, and Ctrl + MouseWheel to zoom in or out. Ctrl + 0 restores the default zoom level.
Other improvements include the ability to display line and column numbers, even when the pbadword is enabled, better performance when opening large files, Ctrl + Backspace deselect the text correctly before moving the cursor, and some other simple but necessary bug fixes.
If you have in the fast ring of the Windows Insider program, you can download the latest version and start playing with the new Notepad now. The rest of us will have to wait for Redstone 5 later this year.
