Authors, editors and translators attend a seminar where the Translation Fund Award for the Promotion of Arab Literature has just been launched.
Abu Dhabi: The Sheikh Zayed Book Prize (SZBA) is organizing a seminar entitled "Arabic Literature in Translation," to be held at the New York Public Library (NYPL) on July 11.
The seminar will feature the recently launched translation fund, which aims to help publishing houses translate award-winning titles into English, French and French German
The event will host writers, editors and translators in a reception where President of the Frankfurt International Book Fair, Juergen Boos, will deliver a welcome address in the presence of Majid Al Suwaidi, UAE General Consul in New York
In the course of of the event, Abdullah Majid Al Ali, Acting Executive Director of the National Libraries Sector at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi DTC Abu Dhabi), will share the details of the translation fund S ZBA
The event will also include a panel discussion, which will feature John Siciliano, editor of Penguin Clbadics and translator of Frankenstein's Ahmad Saadawi in Baghdad, the first Arab novel to reach the final of the Man Booker International Prize. Siciliano also translated The Corpse Exhibition, a collection of stories by Iraqi writer Hbadan Blasim, one of the top ten books for 2014 and winner of the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize.
Mouza Al Shamsi, director of SZBA, said: The Zayed Book Prize aims to promote Arabic literature in other cultures by encouraging dialogue and networking with various cultural and academic institutions interested in learning about the latest trends in the Arab world.
"The launch of this new translation fund means we can support this mission to raise the profile of Arabic literature and help to increase the number of Arabic books translated, published and distributed abroad by providing $ 19,000 for the promotion and production costs of each of our Sheikh Zayed Book Prize winners. "
The NYPL event is the first of a series of seminars that the Book Awards Shaikh Zayed will organize this year to promote the translation of his winning titles, along with other events organized for Italy and the United Kingdom.
