‘Everyone shuts down’: Newark issues 10-day stay-at-home notice due to COVID-19 peak

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) – Newark Mayor Ras Baraka told residents he would post a 10-day stay-at-home notice from the day before Thanksgiving, advising that “everyone is shutting down” and get tested during this holiday period.

The city will also close the streets of the hard-hit Ironbound neighborhood to non-residents from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. – at zip code 07105 – Friday and Saturday to enforce an existing curfew.

People will only be allowed to cross the area if they present proof of residence.

The home stay notice lasts until Friday, December 4.

“We advise all non-essential stores, as well as convenience stores too, that everyone close,” Baraka said. “Not just the shops. Workplaces, hair salons, beauty parlors, gyms, everything is closed from Wednesday, November 25 to December 4. We give you a chance to prepare. From November 25 to December 4 , we ask that everything be closed. Stop everything … And during this time, we ask everyone to get tested. You should only (go out) if you get tested, only if you need ‘groceries, pampers, milk, and medicine if you are tested. Other than that, we have a stay home notice from Wednesday, December 25 to 4. We all have to do this. “

Baraka discussed the order on Facebook Live.

The infection rate is also high at 30% in some parts of the city, so many understand the need. It’s part of a larger problem in New Jersey, where coronavirus measures are moving in the wrong direction and raising concerns about the threat of another full shutdown.

In Hoboken, they are stepping up their tracing efforts, now forcing companies to collect contact information.

Restaurants, bars, gyms and other businesses will collect information that the city says will be used by the Hoboken health department only if a positive case emerges.

The city is also expanding testing to meet demand.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop on Thursday announced a multidimensional approach to tackle the current rise in COVID-19 cases across the region.

In light of the upcoming holidays and family reunions, Jersey City is now offering rapid response testing and expanding its mobilized testing efforts to target hot spots and vulnerable populations.

The city is also rolling out Mask Up JC, offering more than one million free masks to the public.

Gov. Phil Murphy called the latest figures grim and tumbling, saying the state could start to see between 8,000 and 10,000 new cases per day as well as triple-digit deaths.

Cities with the largest increase in cases may soon see tougher restrictions as leaders scramble to control the virus.

“If our numbers go up, we have considered a shutdown,” Orange Mayor Dwayne Warren said. “It could range from 24 hours to 7-10 days.”

State health officials hope the latest coronavirus measures will reverse the spike in cases.

Murphy pleaded with residents to avoid gatherings with anyone outside of their immediate family, especially for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

He also joined six other governors in the Northeast in urging all colleges and universities to make the COVID-19 test available to all residence students before they leave for the Thanksgiving vacation.
