(CNN) – In 1991, Denise Sharon Kulb's body was found in a wooded and undeveloped cul-de-sac in the suburbs of Philadelphia after being reported missing for more than three weeks.

It took 28 years, but the authorities eventually arrested someone in his murder – his boyfriend at the time, thanks in part to new technologies and a pair of socks.

Theodore Dill Donahue, 52, was arrested after Kulb's death after police gathered new evidence and interviews, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and state police said Tuesday. of Pennsylvania.

Donahue has been charged with murder, misuse of corpse, falsification of evidence, obstruction of justice and false information to the police. He pleaded not guilty.

Authorities began to re-investigate Kulb's murder in 2015, using new investigative tools to reconstruct the case, Krasner said.

One of the methods used was photo editing technology linking a yellow sock found at the crime scene to a similar sock found in Donahue's apartment in 1991. After this analysis, investigators determined that "It was a pair of matching socks," said Anthony Voci, Supervisor. of the district prosecutor's office homicide unit.

Kulb, 27, was found dead in November 1991 in an undeveloped part of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Her body was broken down and dressed only with a sweater, with the rest of her clothes piled on it, according to the general counsel.

"Twenty-eight years ago, Denise Sharon Kulb was found dead in a remote area of the suburbs, abandoned and dumped," said Krasner. "She was a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and she deserved a lot better than being killed and left in a place unknown to those who were crying her."

"We are determined to contribute to the closure and peace of mind of those who have been waiting for the resolution of this criminal investigation for almost 30 years," he added.

Donahue appeared in court Wednesday morning to plead not guilty, said his lawyer, R. Emmett Madden. He is detained without bail.

"He is innocent and we are eager to prove his innocence in court," Madden said.

The investigators said that during their first interview with Donahue, he had stated that the last time he had seen it, it was during a drug-related incident. Donahue told them that he and Kulb had bought and ingested crack before being stabbed. Kulb ran for help, and he never saw it again, he said.

But when he was interviewed again in 2015, Donahue told the story differently about seeing her at a bar and admitted that he had already lied, officials said. Kulb 's sister also said that on the day of Kulb' s death – October 19, 1991 – she saw the couple arguing in front of a bar where her sister worked, according to the attorney general.

In the last four years, the Pennsylvania State Police has reportedly conducted numerous interviews with Donahue and other potential witnesses suggesting that Donahue could have been involved in the murder. Prosecutor Voci said that Donahue had told several people in the past 28 years that Kulb had been murdered in his apartment, which ultimately contributed to his arrest.

"We have never finished investigating any cases, as I like to tell people," Voci said.

The interviews "also traced Donahue's tales of how his old girlfriend was found face-down in the strangled woods to death, revealing details that only one eyewitness at the crime scene or at least one of them was killed. the author could have known ", according to the statement of the prosecutor.

Police also said that Donahue also acknowledged that his nickname was "Ted Bundy" during interviews in 1991.

CNN solicited comments from Kulb's family.
