NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Saints have released starting cornerback Janoris Jenkins on another list aimed at helping the club drop below the NFL salary cap of $ 182.5 million this season for the season 2021.
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis announced Jenkins’ release on Thursday, a day after New Orleans informed wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and linebacker Kwon Alexander that they would be removed.
Jenkins started all 13 games he played in 2020, tying the team with three interceptions. He made 54 solo or assisted tackles and was credited with 12 defensive assists.
Cutting Jenkins will lower New Orleans’ salary cap by about $ 7 million. The Saints were yet to cut about $ 25 million in payroll before the league’s new year began on Wednesday.
Jenkins, who started and played 53 games with the Giants between 2016-19, had 12 interceptions and two touchdowns during his time with Big Blue. He has 26 interceptions and eight touchdowns in his career.
He also played four seasons with the Rams when they were in St. Louis.
These latest cuts from the Saints are the latest among more than a handful of top veterans to be released, including tight ends Jared Cook and Josh Hill, and punter Thomas Morstead.
The Saints have yet to hire defensive end Trey Hendrickson, the club’s 2020 sack leader, who is expected to become a free agent next week.
